For chamber ensemble
Burning Music is, as suggested by its title, a piece that paints a picture of the consuming power of fire. Fire is one of the most terrifying and destructive forces in nature, yet humans are able to harness it in order to provide light, heat, and the ability to cook food. In addition to the fire imagery presented in the music, there are several direct allusions to pieces by other composers who also wrote pieces dealing with the nature of fire. One may hear references to the “Ritual Fire Dance” from Manuel de Falla’s El Amor Brujo as well as several overt references to Stravinsky’s The Firebird.
